Bluetooth Stories Primer Tutorial

It’s a tale of two …

Good to have Bluetooth on Occasionally better to have Bluetooth off
Regarding Apple iOS (and macOS) interactions

… today.

Story One

The other day out and about we were tethering our MacBook Air to an iPhone Personal HotSpot network connection, to do some live testing, and perhaps upload to this website’s web server. We were having no success, getting the error message …

Failed to enable Personal Hotspot on “Robert’s iPhone”.

Check to see if the device is turned on and in range of your computer.

… we’re pretty sure we’d been baffled by in the past, the same way it baffled me on this occasion. Never being able to commit to memory the solution, we decided to write this blog posting, and in that way help me as well as some other befuddled users seeing the same issue regarding the same situation.

Didn’t matter how many times we tried to bring up the Personal Hotspot screen in Settings … same problem. Looked at Wi-Fi settings (because that is what a Personal HotSpot represents, isn’t it?!) … nothing. Then looked again at Personal HotSpot screen and noted that it has as the second connection option the heading …

TO CONNECT USING BLUETOOTH

Huh?! What’s Bluetooth got to do with it (other than it being the key word in today’s posting … doh!)? Well, we went looking at the iPhone’s Bluetooth setting. It was set Off. And turning it On … you guessed it … the Personal HotSpot of the iPhone started coming up in the macOS WiFi list of networks it could join! Yay!!!!

Story Two

Another we do not seem to be able to commit to memory is when in the car (which has a Bluetooth connection waiting for “Robert’s iPhone” to connect to) but we’ve been playing music on the iPhone out and about and it didn’t matter about Bluetooth.

We get in the car and start things up with the music momentarily still playing but goes silent after a short while … perhaps “the while” of the car establishing Bluetooth connections, and on this occasion set to playing the Radio, and we get silence even after Unmutes and replay tries.

What the Dickens?!

Pulling over, we eventually tried the Bluetooth screen in Settings on the iPhone. It was On … but you guessed it … turning it Off fixed the problem and music started flowing again!
