A curiosity is all it takes, in this day and age of looking things up in search engines, to have something as innocuous as a file extension you&#8217;ve never heard of, to potentially open up a &#8220;Pandora&#8217;s Box&#8221; of discoveries.<\/p>\n<p>So it was for us recently scouring that wonderful source of data that <a target=_blank title='data.gov' href='http:\/\/data.gov'>data.gov<\/a> is when we came across a downloadable button with a title of &#8220;shp&#8221; in the context of a &#8220;data subject&#8221; related to the &#8220;where&#8221; of life.   This in turn led us onto <a target=_blank title='ipums' href='http:\/\/international.ipums.org\/international\/gis_harmonized_1st.shtml'>Spatially harmonized first-level geography<\/a> &#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote cite='http:\/\/international.ipums.org\/international\/gis_harmonized_1st.shtml'><p>\nMinnesota Population Center. Have you ever heard of the &#8220;shp&#8221; file extension?  We hadn&#8217;t, so started out on our quest for knowledge feeding into Google &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><code><br \/>\n<a target=_blank title='shp file information as Google search' href='https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=shp+file+extension&#038;ie=utf-8&#038;oe=utf-8&#038;client=firefox-b-ab'>shp file extension<\/a><br \/>\n<\/code><\/p>\n<p> &#8230; and got rewarded for all Google efforts, thanks, finding out that the shapefile format is a geospatial vector data format for geographic information, and with <a target=_blank title='Great lead regarding shp file extension' href='http:\/\/gisgeography.com\/free-gis-software\/'>this great lead called &#8220;13 Free GIS Software Options: Map the World in Open Source&#8221;<\/a> where we roadtested a few of the suggested GeoData or GIS (<a target=_blank title='GIS information from Wikipedia, thanks' href='https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Geographic_information_system'>Geographic information system<\/a>) applications, looking for one suitable for an entry level participant like myself.   And that&#8217;s how we lobbed onto the wonderful <a target=_blank title='GeoDa GIS software' href='http:\/\/spatial.uchicago.edu\/software'>GeoDa<\/a> desktop application we installed to this MacBook Pro&#8217;s applications and want to show you a stream of consciousness <a target=_blank href=\"http:\/\/www.rjmprogramming.com.au\/Mac\/geoda.pdf\" title=\"Click picture\">PDF slideshow<\/a> regarding, specifically, using and access that previous downloadable link&#8217;s data.  Maybe you are like me, and love maps?   Well, this could be the entry level GeoData desktop application for you too.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s fine to be &#8220;entry level&#8221; but where could you start a further study of the GeoData subject matter?   Why not start with <a target=_blank title='Learning GIS' href='https:\/\/www.gislounge.com\/learning-gis-resources-for-gis-training\/'>How to Learn GIS<\/a>?  Then there&#8217;s &#8220;Why would you learn GIS&#8221;?  Well, GIS is used extensively in Town Planning and for other purposes by Local Councils in particular, and in scientific research as well.<\/p>\n<p>We go on about &#8220;entry level&#8221; a lot above because yours truly came from a time of university learning when GIS was a huge deal, and not anything you just download as an &#8220;entry level&#8221; piece of software in any form.  This was also a time when CAD (Computer Aided Design) was like this as well.  More than thirty years has made huge difference in these fields, my personal theory being that the &#8220;where&#8221; of life is the most approachable &#8220;question field&#8221; for software developers to make some pretty nifty and eye-catching and immediately useful software.<\/p>\n<p>If this was interesting you may be interested in <a title='Click here to see topics in which you might be interested' href='#d40189' onclick='var dv=document.getElementById(\"d40189\"); dv.innerHTML = \"&lt;iframe width=670 height=600 src=\" + \"https:\/\/www.rjmprogramming.com.au\/ITblog\/tag\/geography\" + \"&gt;&lt;\/iframe&gt;\"; dv.style.display = \"block\";'>this<\/a> too.<\/p>\n<div id='d40189' style='display: none; border-left: 2px solid green; border-top: 2px solid green;'><\/div>\n<hr>\n<p>If this was interesting you may be interested in <a title='Click here to see topics in which you might be interested' href='#d53364' onclick='var dv=document.getElementById(\"d53364\"); dv.innerHTML = \"&lt;iframe width=670 height=600 src=\" + \"https:\/\/www.rjmprogramming.com.au\/ITblog\/tag\/map\" + \"&gt;&lt;\/iframe&gt;\"; dv.style.display = \"block\";'>this<\/a> too.<\/p>\n<div id='d53364' style='display: none; border-left: 2px solid green; border-top: 2px solid green;'><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another implication of a change of street address, for us recently, being so interested in &#8230; the &#8220;where of life&#8221; maps land use (and\/or town planning) &#8230; even as an amateur, is that that may bring new opportunities regarding Geographic &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rjmprogramming.com.au\/ITblog\/local-gis-primer-tutorial\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[12,37],"tags":[1707,480,2654,2653,2789,3798,3795,3303,745,894,2932,3797,3796,1319,1418,1421],"class_list":["post-53364","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-elearning","category-tutorials","tag-co-ordinates","tag-geodata","tag-geographic-information-system","tag-gis","tag-government","tag-information","tag-land-use","tag-local","tag-map","tag-overlay","tag-spatial","tag-topographic","tag-town-planning","tag-tutorial","tag-webpage","tag-website"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.rjmprogramming.com.au\/ITblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/53364"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.rjmprogramming.com.au\/ITblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.rjmprogramming.com.au\/ITblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.rjmprogramming.com.au\/ITblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.rjmprogramming.com.au\/ITblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=53364"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"https:\/\/www.rjmprogramming.com.au\/ITblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/53364\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":53368,"href":"https:\/\/www.rjmprogramming.com.au\/ITblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/53364\/revisions\/53368"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.rjmprogramming.com.au\/ITblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=53364"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.rjmprogramming.com.au\/ITblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=53364"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.rjmprogramming.com.au\/ITblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=53364"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
