{"id":38118,"date":"2018-05-13T03:01:37","date_gmt":"2018-05-12T17:01:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rjmprogramming.com.au\/ITblog\/?p=38118"},"modified":"2018-05-13T09:55:30","modified_gmt":"2018-05-12T23:55:30","slug":"tethering-macbook-pro-to-iphone-primer-tutorial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rjmprogramming.com.au\/ITblog\/tethering-macbook-pro-to-iphone-primer-tutorial\/","title":{"rendered":"Tethering MacBook Pro to iPhone Primer Tutorial"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 230px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a target=_blank href=\"http:\/\/www.rjmprogramming.com.au\/Mac\/tethering_wifi_bluetooth_usb.pdf\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:left; border: 15px solid pink;\" alt=\"Tethering MacBook Pro to iPhone Primer Tutorial\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rjmprogramming.com.au\/Mac\/tethering_wifi_bluetooth_usb.png\" title=\"Tethering MacBook Pro to iPhone Primer Tutorial\"  \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tethering MacBook Pro to iPhone Primer Tutorial<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Today we talk about a networking topic, regarding the idea if you are out and about, out of reach of WiFi connections, with your laptop, notebook or MacBook Pro, but you have available to you a device such as an Android or iPhone or iPad or tablet with inbuilt SIM card network connector, that networks via a mobile network (eg. here in Australia a 4G (soon to go to 5G) network) you (and <b>we<\/b>) can, perhaps &#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a target=_blank title='Phone-as-modem (PAM) or tethering information from Wikipedia ... thanks' href='https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tethering'>&#8220;tether&#8221;<\/a> your laptop, notebook or <b>MacBook Pro<\/b> (<b>Robert&#8217;s MacBook Pro<\/b>) &#8230; to that &#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Android or <b>iPhone<\/b> (<b>Robert&#8217;s iPhone<\/b>) or iPad or tablet with inbuilt SIM card network connector accessing its mobile network (such as, here in Australia, 4G (soon to become 5G))<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>No, our MacBook Pro is not <a target=_blank title='?' href='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ck43JCFAUR8'>Mister Ed<\/a>, but we do form a <a target=_blank title='?' href='http:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/video\/x5r72mb'>&#8220;stable&#8221;<\/a> connection &#8230; chortle, chortle.<\/p>\n<p>The clue to all this is, for us, in the iPhone&#8217;s &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><code><br \/>\nSettings -&gt; Personal Hotspot -&gt; switch on<br \/>\n<\/code><\/p>\n<p> &#8230; and there you will see three modes of &#8220;hotspotting&#8221; &#8230;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>WiFi<\/li>\n<li>Bluetooth &#8230; enable on both and &#8220;Pair&#8221; on both<\/li>\n<li>USB &#8230; we use in Xcode running and testing mobile applications on iPhone (or iPad)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p> &#8230; the first of which is great with that scenario we talked about at the top of the article.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>be on iPhone and touch Settings icon<\/li>\n<li>touch Personal Hotspot<\/li>\n<li>touch to be On<\/li>\n<li>over at MacBook Pro and click Settings icon<\/li>\n<li>click WiFi<\/li>\n<li>pick <b>Robert&#8217;s iPhone<\/b> (or equivalent) in the list and it will have that &#8220;tethering&#8221; icon (two linked ellipses)<\/li>\n<li>voila!
